Timing Belts

A timing belt is an essential component of an internal combustion engine. It links the crankshaft to the camshaft(s), which control the opening and closing of the valves.

Some engines use timing chains instead, but many modern engines use timing belts. While chains are theoretically more durable than belts, belts are lighter, quieter, and more affordable.

The lifespan of a timing belt varies based on make and model, but typically, they last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles (or 5-7 years). Failure to replace a timing belt when necessary can lead to catastrophic engine damage.

Here are some warning signs that your timing belt may be failing:

  • Rough idling or difficulty starting the engine: A worn-out timing belt can throw off the engine's timing and cause a rough idle or difficulty starting the car.
  • Ticking or clicking noises from the engine: This can be a sign that the timing belt is starting to wear out and needs to be replaced.
  • Oil leaks from the front of the motor: A loose, worn or improperly tensioned timing belt can allow engine oil to leak from the front of the motor.
  • Excessive vibration from the engine: A worn, frayed or stretched timing belt can cause the engine to vibrate excessively and can compromise performance.
  • Engine misfires: As the timing belt wears out, the engine's firing sequence can be thrown off, leading to engine misfires.
  • Overheating: A damaged timing belt can cause the engine to overheat due to loss of circulation of the coolant, leading to overheating and causing further damage.
  • If you experience any of these symptoms, check your timing belt. Replacing a timing belt is generally an involved and labor-intensive process, so it's best to err on the side of caution and replace the belt when it's due, rather than waiting for it to break. Taking preventive measures can save a lot of damage and expensive repairs. We sell the genuine BMW timing belts you need, and at favorable prices -- up to 35% off the MSRP, as a matter of fact!
